Octopus is a fascinating animal to study with kids, not only for its eight legs but also for many other interesting things. For example,octopuses have numerous strategies for defending themselves against predators, including the expulsion of ink, the use of camouflage, the ability to jet quickly through the water and the ability to hide.
Another feature that you can study with the kids is the thick, blackish ink that eject. Did you know that the main coloring agent in melanin, which is the same chemical that gives humans their hair and skin color?

Materials and tools: 

  • One or more toilet tissue paper roll. For one octopus you need one roll. 
  • Waterpaint colors.
  • Paint blush.
  • Scissors.
  • Colors markers.
  • Glue.

1. Grab a color of your choice and paint the outer of the toilet paper roll. Before you pick a color, remember that an octopus can camouflage itself by changing its color.

2. After the paint dries, cut with scissors two deep, slits, one oppostie the other, on the top of the roll.

3. Cut two more slits, in the middle of the previous slits, one slit opposite the other.

4. Cut four more slits, in the middle of the previous slits. 

5. Push the legs outwards so they spread out.

6. Add face features, like googly eyes, nose and mouth. You can draw face features onto a blank paper, cut them out, and glue them on the roll.
